Student Voices
Hear from students who've experienced our programs.
"I enjoyed the collaboration through the capstone project and what we learned after getting our hands on a real dataset. I liked the Kahoots—they showed who understood things so others could get help, and the explanations helped when many people got something wrong. Thank you for teaching me about data and AI!"
— Rohan
AI Insights Student, 2025
"Overall, I had a great experience and learned a huge amount about data science in just three weeks. The visualizations and different kinds of graphs, the data talks and exercises, and learning about Pandas and its capabilities—plus the final project—really helped solidify what I learned in a friendly, helpful environment."
— Aditya
AI Insights Student, 2025
"I learned about word vectorization—how words are converted into numerical information by algorithms. I also learned the difference between performance metrics like F1 score versus accuracy and what each tells us. Finally, I learned about data splitting: training, testing, and validation."
— Jeremy
AI Research Student, 2024
"Visualization was heavily emphasized—beyond knowing boxplots, heatmaps, and pie charts, we learned how to translate a massive pile of data into clear graphs. Cleaning large Reddit comment datasets made our data more accurate and was essential for a proper ML model. We truly put ML concepts to the test through this program."
— Arya
AI Research Student, 2025
"At the start, we each came up with our own research questions and learned how to combine them into one. We cleaned and analyzed data, used pandas, visualized with graphs, applied decision trees and random forests, and saw tuning boost performance. Using GitHub, we shared and reviewed code together, strengthening our research work."
— Steve
AI Research Student, 2024
"We would surely like to publish a research paper based on this and maybe help people who are living under impoverished conditions. Going to be published somewhere or shared with government bodies—how it's going to take it forward—we're excited to see it have real impact."
— Ruhan

Frequently asked questions
What will I gain from participating? +
You will build practical data science, AI, and research skills, produce real work you can share, and learn how to communicate results clearly.
Can I publish or present my work? +
Yes. Students may share their work through school newsletters, local newspapers, science fairs, and community showcases. Research-track students can further develop their work for student journals; some students have published in outlets such as the Journal of Student Research (JSR) and Vanderbilt-affiliated student publications.
What portfolio pieces will I leave with? +
A polished project package: a write-up, strong visuals, a presentation, plus code and documentation you can include in your portfolio.
Do you write recommendation letters? +
In some cases, yes—when we have worked with you closely enough to write a specific, evidence-based recommendation.
Do you help with college applications? +
We do not provide individualized college application counseling. However, we can refer students to college counselors in our network.
Will I receive mentorship? +
Yes. You will receive feedback throughout the program on problem framing, methods, and communicating findings—across both skill-building and research tracks.
How does this connect to social impact? +
You will learn to use data to understand real-world issues and communicate insights that can inform decisions and community action.
How does this help with admissions outcomes? +
Students can use their work to demonstrate initiative, rigor, and impact. Alumni have been admitted to universities including Stanford, UC Berkeley, USC, Harvey Mudd, and UIUC.
Can I stay part of the community after I finish? +
Yes. Students can remain engaged through alumni connections, future programs, and opportunities to share work and support peers.
What alumni support is available? +
Alumni can stay connected for guidance, resources, and opportunities to continue building skills and projects.
