AI & Creativity

Explore AI in art, music, storytelling, and design through guided, no-code creation projects and responsible AI discussions.

AI & Creativity introduces students to how generative AI is transforming creative work in visual art, music, storytelling, and digital design. Students learn, at an age-appropriate level, how models generate images, text, and sound by learning patterns from data, and how people collaborate with AI through prompting, iteration, and thoughtful refinement. Through interactive demonstrations and guided, no-code activities, students create original outputs, compare versions, and practice giving clear creative direction. Real-world examples from media, entertainment, and design show how AI is used in production workflows and where human judgment remains essential.

The program builds responsible creator habits by addressing originality, copyright and attribution, bias and representation, and privacy when sharing work. The program concludes with a capstone portfolio project that students present at a final showcase, explaining their creative goals, process, and ethical choices.

Program Information

Prerequisites

  • No prior programming experience required
  • Comfort using a computer for web-based tools
  • Interest in creativity (art, music, writing, design, or media)

Program Format

  • Live online sessions 2:00 - 4:00 PM PST
  • Daily 2-hour sessions: 1 hour lecture + real-world example + hands-on creation activity
  • Engaging lectures with visual demos of generative AI concepts
  • Creative challenges to practice prompting, iteration, and revision
  • Group discussions on ethics, originality, and responsible sharing
  • Individual or team-based capstone portfolio development

Curriculum Highlights

  • Generative AI Basics: How AI generates images, text, and sound; what 'training data' means at a conceptual level
  • Creative Collaboration: Prompting strategies, constraints, iteration, and comparing versions to meet a creative goal
  • Creative Workflows: Translating an idea into a plan (style, audience, tone), then producing and refining outputs
  • Ethics & Originality: Copyright, attribution, bias and representation, and responsible use of AI tools
  • Portfolio & Communication: Selecting final pieces, writing short creator notes, and presenting the creative process clearly

Capstone Project & Showcase

Students will create an AI-assisted creative portfolio, such as a mini art series, a short story/script, a storyboard, a simple music loop with narrative, or a design concept set. Working individually or in small teams, students define a creative goal, audience, and style constraints, document iteration through drafts, prompt changes, revisions, and reflections, and include a short 'responsible use' note addressing attribution, originality, and ethical choices. Students present their work at the final showcase to an audience that includes parents, educators, guests, instructors, mentors, and peers. Upon successful completion, students receive a certificate recognizing their participation and creative work.
